Dancefloor Martyr

from by Allen Mask

Dancefloor Martyr (DM) was actually the first song I wrote for "Sweet Dreams." It was a track I played around with for "Pilot Season" but we removed it from the album list in fear that it didn't quite fit with the vision of that record.

DM was originally set aside to be one of the singles to release to labels we were shopping to at the time. It is the product of some of my longest studio sessions recording one track. We did this song in about 3 or 4 weeks which is a bit slow for my normal pace.

You'll notice I mention Avalon at the end of the second verse. For you Chapel Hill natives, Avalon was an old night club on Rosemary Street that closed many years ago when I was a kid. I have never actually been to the club, but when I first started writing DM it reminded me of a song they would have played there.

Verse 1:

Its not too often that I
Wander this far into a club
But since im here
And I see you
I think I’ll fall in love
Don’t always dance I tend to
Pull up my pants and rock and away
But leaning back is far from any move ill do today
I see these gentlemen spit game all on your plate
And bought you drinks you didn’t want
But they just need to initiate
Its getting late lend me your hand we’ll carry on up
Up to the stand where DJ Maryland will surely play your favorite song

Its not too soon for you to
Come be my partner lady
And for the moment be my dancefloor martyr baby
I’ll make some room for you to
Play as my starter lady
Until forever be my dancefloor martyr baby

Cuz I may…just paint you in my picture lover
And I may…just take you with me undercover
And I may…just pull you to my middle bring your hip side right into my rip tide move a little

Verse 2:

I’d like to think that you and me could make the perfect couple
Cuz we together vs the world could make our digits double
I know you’ve waited for me
Not to speak too confidently you should really compliment me
For my choice in women – right?
Ill keep you warmer than your blankets on a winter night
Red wine and dinner you can you can feel my current linen type
No need for oversight – that’s not what im getting at
Id love to make this last beyond our evening here at Avalon

And while I got my hands around your waist
Let me let my heart beat into yours before we close the double doors and leave
These swing heroics and our shag steps
Got me feelin mad fresh
Let me dip you should you fall im coming with you
